can I download sp3 for installation on a different pc?

I have had to completely clear my pc after a crash. I have cleaned the disk and reinstalled XP but it all closes down after two or three minutes - it took about five attempts to reinstall XP. I am getting a message about requiring updates, (which appears to be SP3 as it contains all the updates) but the pc closes down before the download is finished. Is it feasible to download to a memory sick on my laptop and install it from there?

If the PC is going down that often I would not waste your time downloading SP3 but spend some time seeing what is causing the system to go down. SP3 is not likely to fix this (I dont like the sound of it taking 5 goes to install XP).

Could be a corrupt hard disk, or faulty motherboard or other faulty component (CPU, memory).

Have a look in the Windows error log and see if Windows has written any messages there.

To anwer your specific question, yes you can download ANY Windows service pack to another machine and put it on a memory stick, CD, DVD etc.

I have a number of Windows Service Packs saved on CD and DVD.

However note that SOME service packs do require fixes to be installed first, before the SP is installed (not sure this is true of XP SP3)

Thanks a lot VNG. I think that you are maybe on the money with your first reply. I've just noticed my typo - a Freudian slip? I'm certainly getting sick of the problem. I think it's time for a new pc.

If AMD processor, you should apply the AMD patch first.

Check processor cooling and fan.
Check (maybe by substituting) memory.
