There are 2 boxes.

One of them contains a cheque for £1million.

The other is empty.

You can have £100,000 right now. Or ... you can open one box.

Would you take the £100,000 ?

I picture myself with a briefcase containing £100,000, outside a bookmakers.

Would I go in and put it on the counter to place a bet.

No way would I!
I take your last point, perhaps you just got your ratios wrong in the original question.
if it was ½ million or open the box for 1 million or nowt i think i would take the ½ million then
Since I like living on the edge I'll take a gamble... :)
There is a world of difference between risking money you have worked hard to put together, and risking a gift you've never had.

One is being offered a 50% chance of winning £1M, and the only stake required is 10% of that million, that isn't yet yours anyway. Unless you are desperate for the money, it is a "no brainer", You open the box in the knowledge you never miss what you never had. Even a cautious person who thinks, "a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush", must agree that it isn't worth passing up, "10 in the bush".
Stop it Old_Geezer, you're being to logical. lol

You're taking away the fun in probability.
Sure you are being guaranteed £100k if you walk away, so there is no logic to that.
