In a questionnaire you are given a choice of answers YES and NO.

If you place an 'X' on NO does that mean your answer is YES, because you have not obliterated the word.

Or have you selected 'NO' as your answer.

Yes. If you cross out No if means you say yes. If in doubt, I put a ring round Yes AND cross out No!

OK let me be more precise. My daughter received a parking charge notice at a private car park. On the form it says: Was Driver Present YES/NO and the attendant put an 'X' on NO.

Incidentally my daughter was not present.

I'd go with 'x marks the spot' i.e. in this case the driver was not present.

I would read that as meaning "Yes" the driver was present, not "No" the driver wasn't

On most forms when they tell you to put an X in the box its normally next to the box with the right answer.

So if you were asked are you male or female (I am female) then I would put an 'X' next to female.

So I would think the parking attendant means no your daughter was not present especially if you know this to be true anyway.

On a ballot paper an X in the box against a candidate's name means you have chosen that particular person, i.e. X indicates the correct answer. To avoid any confusion I normally put a tick instead of an X.
