probably, but at least it worked, its better than slapping them
I found brandy worked best!
I was rubbish...they went to sleep in my arms everynight. If they woke I cuddled them back to sleep.
Me too ummmm, still doing it with the (neraly) two year old twins!
I had to do it until I could sit middle son down and explain things. Then he was OK...
I like humpy07's answer as it is so close to the truth. Victorian nannies (not all) used to douse babies' dummies in tincture of laudanum ( a derivative of opium, at the time available over the counter in pharmacies), to keep them quiet. Even in the first half of the 20th century, dipping a dummy in whisky coated with sugar was not unknown.

There may be some baby-boomers out there who remember a product called ' Nurse Dinneford's Gripewater ', given to infants to relieve the symptoms of colic. It contained a small amount of alcohol and tasted lovely! When my baby brother was born and I was 4, if she gave him a spoonful I would pester her until I got one too, which may go some way to explaining my current fondness for the bottle!
My wife Elsie says she would like to help you,but as it's over 50 years ago since she had her last baby, she has forgotten!
tell em boogy man is outside waiting for them to make a sound, they'll soon nod off!!!
