I am a bit confused.  do you need an ACTIVE phone line in order to get broad band?  When i was in my 3rd year at uni I didn't have a phone but had NTL broadband, is that still the case?  I want broadband but don't want to have to pay for a telephone that I don't need too!

Can anyone reccommend any providers?

Hey there,

for an ADSL broadband connection, yes you need an active phone line.

NTL and Telewest are cable companies and so broadband through them does not require a phone line (only their cables).

A good place for info and reviews by an independant is www.adslguide.org.uk have a look around there. They review cable as well i think.

If you are going to get adsl (through a phone line), then f2s provide the best service but are not the cheapest.

Plusnet are very close behind F2S, but are cheaper! (2mbit connection for 15 a month with no download limit!!!!)

If you are gonna stick to cable, then you are really restricted to NTL or Telewest. Check with them to see which provides cable for your area. (TELEWEST is the better provider).

They used to be part of the same company, but have since gone there seperate ways, even thouugh they do still have some relations.

NTL USED to have awful service and even worse customer service, but i used them over 5 years ago. They have probably improved considerably since then.

Bottom line, if you want cheap, good adsl, get Plusnet.
If you want cable, try to get telewest.

If you want a digital tv package along with Broadband get NTL. The cable comes out of the TV box. Further the monthly rental for a phone line will be free, therefore you will only pay for the calls made.

I pay only 36 per month all in. Thats over 50 channels on TV (Digital Quality), very fast broadband and a phone line.

Customer services is a bit slow but I find their broadband dept most helpful even for just general advice on computer skills.
