A strange one . . .

A small icon has appeare don my desktop - blue background with white text saying D - SUB

The strange thing is that the cursor goes behind it so it is unclickable.

Any ideas please?

It's not on your desktop, it's on your monitor screen (that's why the mouse doesn't interact with it). Presumably, you've accidentally activated an OSD option on your monitor. There will be some buttons somewhere on the monitor - but you'll probably need to read the manual in order to turn it off.
