What type of paint ......

Surely a pot of paint will be more expensive than buying black planting pots which are 79p in B&Q?

You'll need something very flexible.
Don't know if it is any good as I've never tried it, but one of the TV Sales channels were flogging some black paint they claimed was flexible, a few days back. Just the one "colour" though.

With just a little effort, we've had pretty good results doing the same project here in the U.S. The plnaters were fairly large... perhaps 20 inches tall, and 18 inches each side.
After thoroughly washing them with a power washer, I used a medium grit metal ("wet") sandpaper, followed by a medium steel wool to lightly etch the surface. After drying I used this product: http://www.misterart....aint-for-plastic.html ... although I live in the U.S. a similar product should be available in the U.K. Did it last summer and they still look pretty good after being stored outside in our western U.S. winter. Tip: apply the spray paint on the inside down to about where the soil level will be for a nice, complete finish...

I agreed that standard planters would be cheaper but these are not standard and fit unusual brackets and can't be replaced with new ones - hence my question about painting them!!

I used Plasti-Kote satin super, spray paint on some plastic and pottery garden planters two years ago and they are still as good today. You can buy it in Homebase. They also have a very good website showing how to use it on various items around the home and garden.
