Question regarding itunes

Ive got a question regarding itunes, if i hav some music on an ipod and i reinstall the operating system on the computer can i copy the music from the ipod to the computer so it goes into the library, would it work or not

Though I would back up the whole library another way (onto DVD?) before reinstalling personally.
