Thai Immigration

A friend of mine has a partner who is Thai. He is British. They don't live in this country at the moment but would like to. She is having his baby. For her to be able to stay in Britain would he have to marry her, or would it be enough that she is having a baby? Would the baby have to be born here to enable her to stay? Would anyone know where I could find out this information?

Firstly, the baby, if properly registered, can have Thai and UK citizenship.  The Thai partner can apply for a visa to move to the UK, and I understand that there is no automatic right even if they are married.  This visa would normally be for a specified period of time (6m, 1,2 or 5 years) and can be renewed.  After a period of time in the UK, the Thai partner can apply for a British passport and right of abode.

The British Embassy would need convincing that the relationship is genuine, and that the British partner has the funds and the capability of supporting the family in the UK. A number of people in similar situations seem to be naive and tell the Embassy silly lies, thereby not helping their case.  I understand it can be a frustrating process for even the most obviously genuine cases, as the Embassy officers can be extraordinarily cynical
