I've bought some lily of the valley plants with the intention of planting them in a trough which will be behind a low wall by a pond where there is no soil. As LOTV die back, I am looking for something that I can plant in the trough with them, which will continue to look good after the LOTV have finished, obviously it needs to be something that will not swamp the LOTV, but hopefully have a bit of height to it so that it can be seen and that I don't need to do much to as I know that LOTV don't like to be disturbed once planted - so any ideas please?
the one thing you have to beware of the Lilly of the Valley plants is that their roots can be quite invasive over time and if you plant them in a border they can be quite capable to sending up new shoots in your nearby lawn!. However if you are planting them in a trough, you won't have this problem and maybe some hostas might be an option as being in a container they should be out of the reach of most slugs. They will be starting to develop their leaves as the LoV die back.
