I have seen a number of companies advertising very cheap or even free phone calls from my home phone to UK landline numbers.  I know that I'll have to pay BT a line rental fee but apart from this, what's the catch with (for example) www.1899.com which offers all calls to UK landlines for 0p?

Just had a look. There is a 3p connection charge on UK calls. After that the call is free.

Thanks for that.  I remember seeing that somewhere but other people (Onetel / Alpha / AOL Talk / Toucan) charge around 10 per month on top of the BT line rental.  It appears that I can make 333 calls per month at 3p a time for the same amount.  Or am I missing something?
The best one to go with is definately Talk Talk from The Carphone warehouse, all calls to other people on Talk Talk are free any time, plus you get free weekend calls and off peak to other landlines depending on what package you go for. Been with them since it started and they are brilliant. You can also nominate a couple of mobile numbers and an overseas as well. Give them a try, sound like a sales line but it is worth it

We've been using 1899 for about three months and our bills are next to nothing. Especially as my partner phones Russia frequently and the charge is only 3p min. No catches!

Have a look at www.moneysavingexpert.com. I  signed up with 18666 (same company  but different deals i.e one better for mobile calls) My last quarterly bill was under 2. I make at least one national rate call of at least 30 minutes daily to my dear mother  ( who will be representing the UK if marathon talking ever becomes an event!) I've had no problems and would recommend them. You have to dial 18866 before each call. Before you are connected a voice says 'zero pence per minute'. There is a connection charge of 2p per call and that is all you pay.It has certainly slashed my telephone bill.
