A vanful of young Germans (who had all sorts of tools and were probably ready to drive across the Sahara) came rushing over, helped me fix it, then took me out for dinner. I never even found out their names, but I've always felt good about Germans since then.

Sadly, people of all nationalities can be found exhibiting disappointing behaviour when on holiday, most especially those among the package holiday brigades, but they are always an unrepresentative sample of the majority of their fellow nationals. One is inclined to notice such behaviour and it creates a disproportionately negative impression. I agree with previous replies here.
It’s always dangerous to generalize national traits based on personal experience of a small number of people.
But many years ago when I was on holiday in Barbados, the Germans staying at the complex had a guaranteed way of ensuring that they always got a sunbed – and that was to take a sunbed into their room at the end of the day.

I've always found the Germans to be by far the nicest of all European nationalities, I think you just got unlucky. The dutch and danes always seem jolly friendly too actually.
