Unlike digital TV, do we really need digital; radio?

Are these radios all they are cracked-up to be? Yes I know one can sometimes get stations that cannot be received by FM sets, but then there are plenty of stations that one can received on FM that can't be by digital, my local radio station for example.

It is surprising to note that although digital radio will be rolled out by the end of 2015, they won't be fitted as standard to new cars until 2013

In my opinion yes, and I much prefer digital radio. It's so much more easy to pick-up stations.

No, I don't think we need Digital radio at all. My oh bought me a digital radio 2 Christmases ago,it is now gathering dust on a shelf as I didn't like it at all,it is a battery radio only and it went through batteries like they were going out of fashion! I listen to Radio 2 which I can receive perfectly well on FM, I didn't think the reception was all that and I live in a good reception area! The only plus is that you can receive radio stations that you can't get on FM.
Seems to me the Government are only interested in selling off the bandwidth to the mobile phone companies, exactly the reason why we are being forced to go digital on TV!

Yes, radio should go all digital. It is cheaper and will lead to more choice.

Yes Gromit it is there in FM, but that is via the computer.

I mostly listen to the digital channels which are on Freeview. If I want anything else I go online to places like www.shoutcast.com. There are quite a few other internet sites offering radio channels.

I can't say that I listen to the radio much - if I do, I can get all the channels through my iphone streaming it from the web.

That said, I can see the big sticking poiint to be the car. I don;t think that manufacturers are putting them in as standard yet, and most people will not want to change their radio over to an after market solution.

Quality - DAB radio stations are "compressed", so that lots of stations can be squeezed into the available bandwidth. Because of this compression, some stations on DAB are not in as good a quality as on FM. In particular, the BBC stations are transmitted on a low bitrate to squeeze their range of stations into the available space.

I do not own a DAB or analogue radio. I mostly listen at home through Freeview which presumably most of the country is able to do. I can listen to hundreds of UK stations using the RadioTime streams which is hooked to my AppleTV. I can also listen to thousands of stations worldwide through my Itunes radio that way as well. I too stream through my iPhone when I am out and about. Which is a long way of saying, I am ready for the analogue switch off.
