Set up associations

How is this done please, I receive a jpeg and I want to see the photo, it says set up an association,
I'm on Vista and have the DUMMIES book can't find it in there or is it so simple they did not think to put it into the book. !!!!!!!

When you right click on the icon of the image do you not get a menu that includes "Open With......", then pick one of the programs that will show the jpeg. If not listed go for the "choose program" option and navigate the the program that you have in mind.
