The commonest causes are Presbycusis ( deafnes of ageing).Noice Induced Hearing loss (Ocupational disease) and Idiopathic ( no known cause)
If the tinnitus is in one ear only, then this may have special medical implications needing investigation.
Treatment...drugs to increase blood supply to the ear (disappointing).
Tinnitus masker......provides a moe acceptable noice to mask out the tinnitus.
May be a difficult problem to deal with.
Ask to see an ENT surgeon.

I have it lots with menieres disease and you gradually learn to not notice it so much or to distract yourself.
Personal stereos are good as they seem to fool the ears somehow, not sure why and have heard other meniere's sufferers say the same thing, but it seems to work.
The drugs I take for menieres help it but not sure which one, how or why (betahistines and stemetil in case someone knows).
Have you seen anyone about it?
