The very gentlemanly Mr Veritas posted a thread in a post I did a couple of days back with me saying how wonderful it would have been to be Land Army Girl back then and as usual our elder statesman spoke a lot of sound sense, he talked about the hardships of those years and just how easy it is to view them, as maybe did, through rose colored specs..
so was the 40s/50s/and 60s so great after all

Struggling to hear 208 on a litle transistor seems such a lovely nostalgic thing, but at the time it was bloody annoying.

I remember the 60s - no central heating. Single glazing. Jack Frost on the inside of the windows. Good old days my foot.

Our house was like that all the time in the 50s & 60s panic, red hot in front of the coal fire, freezing at the back. But -- the 60s were a lovely time to be young and fancy free, I don't know how it was for the parents but I really enjoyed it!

I was part of a naval/arny detachment seconded(no volunteers) to look after Prince Philip on Malta etc at various times between 1949 and 1951.
So I speak from the heart when I say how much I despise him.

Just remember,there were no (this is before,during and just after WW2):~
Microwaves
Fridges (except for the well off)
Washing Machines
Most people had no car,we had to use a bus or walk.
Holidays were one week(paid).
Mobile Phones,in fact we didn't have a phone until 1960!
TV
VHS/DVD
Life was hardest for the housewife,stuck at home,cleaning with primitive aids,and washing by hand(or in a copper).The weekly wash could (and did) take up all of Monday,and THEN she had to cook a meal(made fresh) for family and Husband.
Good Old Days it wasn't,well not to me looking back from here.

Some people still use a bus or walk, having Central heating is a waste of space when you are unable to pay the Gas Bill.
At least with the old fireplace could you could burn some wood to keep warm.

My answer to bobbisox was not directed to your opinion, which you are entitled to, but to her definition of the adjective "gentlemanly", which I found rather confusing and gave an example.

The differnece between women in the 40's and 50's(and this person) is they had NO choice.
This woman is only "playing" at living in the past,she knows full well that she can "come out of it" at any moment she chooses.
Besides which,her fantasy only seems to involve "indoors" the rest of her life is lived by 2010 standards I bet!
