Bank accounts are always 8 digits in my experience.
Is it an A&L account- they have a slightly different system I recall .

yes its allicance and leicester...i have sent them an email but wont get an awnser for atleast 24 hours so asked on here.
If you sort code is something like 72-50-00 on your cheques, for payments to and from your account the first digit of the account number becomes the last on the sort code, ie 23456789 with 72-50-00 becomes 3456789 with 72-50-02.
Sorry, that was a slightly wrong example - 223456789 with 72-50-00 sort code becomes 23456789 with 72-50-02 sort code.
I thought it must be A&L. When you opened the account they would have sent you a useful booklet which tells you things like how to make online payments and it explains about adding a digit from your sort code to your 7 digit number. I'm not sure why they can't make it easier for customers by telling you the 8 digit number
As per above here is the A&L website explanation...

http://tinyurl.com/A-L-8-digit
My A&L cheque book tells me how to quote my sort code and account number to third parties - pretty sure you just drop the first number
