Teasmade machine

I am reading a British mystery set in the 1970's and there is a reference made to a Teasmade machine. Being an American, I haven't a clue as to what this means. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Its a Tea maker that sits by the side of your bed and you set it (likean alarm clock) so that when you wake your tea is ready. for a picture go to http://www.teasmade.com/goblin7.htm they still make them.

A teasmade usually consists of a tray with a machine on it that incorporates an alarm clock with a water boiling machine. You put the water in the machine before you go to sleep and it comes to the boil as the alarm goes off. The water is poured over tea or tea bags and so you wake up to a pot of tea ready made to drink without having to go to the kitchen and make it.

In the 70s a teasmade was a brill xmas pressie for your mum from all the kids. How much did they cost anyone remember?

This is just too cool! The closest thing to it that we have is an automatic coffee maker with a timer and that would be kept in the kitchen. To: xyzzyplugh, I think you may be right about Americans not using kettles very much. I make a cup of tea every night but I use the microwave to heat the water. I used to have a tea kettle that whistled but it broke and I never replaced it. I don't think many Americans know how to make a proper pot of tea as we tend to rely on tea bags and make it by the cup instead of by the pot.

Xyz, All-in-all, I think I'd rather have a "tease-maid" by my bedside! But yes, the Teasmade was a wonderful device...I've still got one in the attic, but only because it wouldn't fit in with current breakfasting arrangements.

This reminds me of one of the classic moments from the 'Goon Show'. A scene between Eccles and Bluebottle: 'My granddad's got one of those things that wakes you up in the morning, boils the kettle and pours the tea out for you' 'Oh, yeah! I've got one of them - what's it called - er..' 'My grandma!' (I don't claim to be word perfect with the quote). This probably won't mean anything to an American either!

Merthyr Imp, I am a big fan of British comedy shows, or as we call them, Britcoms. It's true that before receiving these wonderful answers to my question, the comedy skit that you mentioned would have left me wondering.... But not now, thanks to all of you who responded.
