G major chord on guitar

Can the chord be played with the first string open and second string at the third fret, (GBDGDE) instead of the conventional pattern which is the other way round for these two strings (GBDGBG)?

No. That fingering is both G6 and Em7+9

Thanks, I didnt think so. I had a minor altercation with my daughters guitar teacher. He insisted (and took great offence with his '33 years knowledge') there are many ways of playing this chord but this one did not look or sound right to me.

I have seen the 3rd fret on the 2nd string approach before, but since when did an E come into a G major? Unless he's teaching not to hit that string.
