what qualifications do I require to be a librarian

I applied to work in a library some time ago (with an Eng Lit degree) and was told I needed a degree in Library Studies to be considered.

Generally a Master's Degree in Information Management (also has different titles). All the universities that offer it are listed on the Library Association's website at www.cilip.org.uk. There are also diplomas etc, but everyone where I work has the Masters so if you're serious you ought to go for that.You usually need to have had experience working in a library to get on the course.

in my experience, in order to be a library assistant (not a librarian) all you need is 3 GCSEs at C or above, and they like you to be computer literate.

Whilst Minimatronic is generally right about classifications to be a library assistant it can depend on what sector you want to work in. At the beginning of my career I worked as a library assistant in a medical library and in a university library. In the medical library the library assistants had to have a degree and in the university library most of the library assistants had A-levels or a degree. Law or business libraries will probably ask a lot as well because they pay well.
