N.H.S. Complaint
Does anyone know how to go about making a complaint about the care received in ante natal. My daughter has had a baby girl (my first granchild) weighing a tiny 3lb 14oz last saturday mornin. Heres the story. She had been having contractions 7-8 mins apart from tuesday morning, it being her first baby she wasent sure what to do so phoned st marys hospital m/c and was told not to go in until contractions were 3 mins apart or her waters break. Thursday night she had a show but was told the same. Friday night she was in agony but still only 6-7 mins apart. Hospital told her to take paracetomol and a warm bath. By saturday morning at 5o clock she decided enough and was getting dressed to go in when all of a sudden baby decided to make her way into the world. Luckly her partner was there he phoned an ambulance and they gave him instructions and ellie popped out after just 3 pushes. In the last 8 wks my daughter has been sent to the hospital 6 times by her midwife at the doctors with high blood pressure, swollen feet ankles and hands. She has had protien in her water as well which all points to pre eclamsia. The hospital dident seem at all concerned and just told her to rest. This has obviously affected the babies weight to be low.She is now in I.C.U. We all feel that the hospital have not done there duty to care for her she was not even told the baby was small.Myself and her partner really want to put in a complaint about her lack of care but havent got a clue where to start.

Congratulations on the birth of your first grandchild.
I hope Mum and babe are ok.
I suggest you get in touch with the PALS team at the hospital you have a grievance with. You can find out more from this website: http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1082.aspx?Category ID=68&*************=153
Hope this helps.

Congratulations on the birth of your grand daughter.
Was she premature as weight does seem low? One of my daughters was 2lb 2oz , the same as a bag of sugar but she was early and thrived and is now a mother herself.
When you say "we all feel" is that your daughter too?

Hi Karene. Slightly off what you are actually asking, I just wanted to say that I am a new grandmother. My grandson was born six months ago in Chicago. He was taken out six weeks early as not enough fluid round him and was weighing 4lbs. The good news is that he is now a very healthy little chap of sixteen pounds. Hope all goes well for your daughter and grandaughter too.
thats terrible
does your hospital have a website.
i'm just about to complain about a local doctor and the way you go about it is go onto the NHS... Your area.... whatever area your in. Then there is a link to 'how to complain'. Thats how it works in our area not to sure if all areas will be the same.
Theres also a phone number but my friend is a nurse and she said they have 28 days to follow up any of the complaints done in this way.
i read our local NHS website and thats the way you can complain about doctors, hospital staff etc
hope that helps

Thanks to everyone who took time to answer. Baby ellie was 37+4 wks. My daughter is also very angry at her treatment and does wish to persue a complaint against the hospital in question. Luckily she was taken to another hospital (Tameside general) after having baby . she says she would not feel as if they were giving all the help that baby needed if being taken to the hospital where she had her ante natal appts. We are talking about a brand new hospital that only opened up in june supposidly the best hospital in england !!!!!!!
Hi everyone. Ellie is finally home where she belongs with her mummy n daddy. she is now a massive 4lb 13oz. I have been on the internet and got quite a lot of info have now given it to my hero of a son in law and he is taking it from there. you have 6 months to put in a complaint so will keep you informed as to hoe they go on. For now i am just enjoying being a nana. thanks.xx
Just a little update.
Ellie is now thriving at 16lbs 8oz.
Still has to go and see the consultant every 3 months but is coming on a treat.
Mummy just gone back to work part time so nanna here is baby minding 3 days a week and loving every minute of it.
Did not get anywhere with a complaint about how they were treated at the time of delivery but to be quite honest all has turned out well.
Just hope if another baby comes along they get treated better next time.
Thanks for all your advise and support.
