For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.my parents live in perpignan, and a reasonable route (avoiding paris) is a16 via boulogne to abbeville, a28 to rouen, a13/n154 via evreux & dreux to orleans, a10/a71 to clermont-ferrand, a75 via viaduc millau to beziers and the a9, which runs along the coast, east to montpellier & avignon, west to narbonne & spain. the a75 is toll-free, and the scenery is awesome.
The TGVs are a lovely relaxing experience - you get to see the countryside, they're clean and comfortable, and they drop you off close to town centres.
