CA 125 Test, what does this mean?

Hi, my doc has told me that she wants to do a CA 125 test, i have had stomach pains constantly for 2 weeks and came on my period yesterday and it was a 26 day cycle this time, a few months ago i had a 36 day cycle.
So when i looked up on the net it says its a test for ovarian cancer, but the doc said it will tell her how my ovaries are working, but i cant find any info on this.
Im 29 with 2 children aged 10 and 6.
I hope someone can help, because im so worried! I have to have a urgent scan, but that can take 2 weeks! thanks everyone x

The scan is the important investigation.
