I am looking to buy a caravan --what should I be looking for bearing in mind I only have a Vauxhall Meriva 1.6 8 valve Life to pull it with

You can pull a small caravan with the car you have, depends on the size caravan you are thinking of buying.

Certainly nothing heavier than something like Sprite Europa 390. The Swift weighs in at 1240kg which is 90% of your cars weight. The caravan club recommends no more than 85% of your cars weight for inexperienced caravan towers. 85% of your cars weight is 1169kg so look for something near that weight.
