Engine Sizes vs Prices

I have a question about something thats puzzled me for years.
Why does a more powerful engine cost more?
If you buy a Vauxford Repmobile with a 1.4ltr engine it will cost more than a Vauxford Repmobile with a 1.2ltr. There is no difference to the chassis, gearbox or running gear, and surely Vauxford have both engines under production so why is the extra .2ltr more expensive. If anything there is less metal in the cylinders so the engine should be cheaper.
It confuses poor old me.

Because the larger engined vehicle will generally have extra equipment, better trim level, larger wheels, etc.

Only if you specify the extras. If you had two cars with identical levels of extras, identical wheels, brakes etc, you'd still pay more for the bigger engine

Whatever made you think price was totally related to cost - price is also based on demand. People want the more powerful model so the company can screw more profit from it.

They're not gonna redesign the gearbox etc for a .2ltr increase in engine size. You might get an extra 10-15hp out of it, but not much.
I can understand the difference between a Vauxford Repmobile with a 1.6ltr and a Vauxford with a 2.8ltr Turbo and sports kit. But when it's tiny increments in power why is the price increased?

You may be right, but if people are willing to pay more then they`ll keep charging more as Canary42 said

You could say the same about Chicken fillets in Tesburys supermarket...value ones are £3.50 whereas others are £5.50, and a chickens a fooking chicken in my eyes but I still pay for the more expensive one

Well assuming all the rest is equal the extra cost is down to the extra performance, that costs very little extra but the firm know they can charge more for a higher spec. Motor manufacturers are experts in knowing what they can get away with charging. This is based mainly on human weakness.
