What I did was contact the credit agencies, e.g. experian, equifax, credit call e.t.c. I had to get a written and signed letter from the person I wanted to be dissassociated with, saying that they had no financial link with me. It took a while but did work.
Have you been refused credit? You could ask the company why? How do you know for sure it's because of this other person? Either way it's a good idea to get a copy of your file from the agengies, that way you'll know if it really was due to this other person.
tali - that is not correct - the name is the main factor. If you live in an adress where a previous tennant has defaulted on agreements, it will not effectyour credit in any way shape or form unless an association has been made between you. An association will only occur if an application for credit is made in joint names
As from around November 2004 credit rating only affects the person named not the property that they live in. If you have any further questions regarding this or want to make sure then I recommend: http://www.debtquestions.co.uk/debt_forum/
