The process is described in a few places here.
Open an account at GRAvatar. Tell it the email address you used to enrol here. Follow the instructions to upload a picture to them (you can crop it if needed at GRAvatar. Make sure it is graded 'G'
Then come back here, go to your profile, and click the edit link. Tick the box for an avatar and save.
