My brother got nailed recently by a crafty bit of insurance fraud.
He was in Asda shopping, when the car in the next bay hit his whilst driving out. My brother came out to find dents and scratches all the way along the side of his brand new Citreon. There was no note left, and there was no CCTV covering the car park. He phoned my Dad who advised that there was nothing else to do in Asda, so go home and report it to his insurers.
My brother arrived home to find a police officer waiting for him. The car that had damaged his had driven home, called the police and said that my brother was the one who caused the damage and he had driven off, thus leaving the scene of the accident.
My brother contacted his insurers staright away, and they said they would start investigating this as the other car involved was an old banger, whereas my bro's was shiny and new.
Anyway the investigation showed that the other car had two 'witnesses to the crash' (the wife of the driver, and a friend of the driver who happened to work for Asda and be out having a smoke in the carpark at the time of the accident) so my brother was told that any possible court case was not going to go in his favour. The insurers decided on an out of court settlement, although my brother managed to negotiate keeping his no claims.
Few months later and my brothers insures phoned back saying that further investigation had revealed that the other vehicle had been involved with at least 3 other incidents that were similar as well as two cases of being hit from behind. The vehicle had been seized by Police who found that the reversing lights had been disabled, and the mate who worked for Asda wasn't allowed to smoke in the car park in sight of customers. They're now awaiting prosecution. Let the good times roll
