New to downloading music

I want to LEGALLY download songs, and would like advice on which are the best places to do this. Generally the songs I want will be popular songs which I hear on the radio, so not too obscure.
I would like to download MP3 files, rather than the encrypted iTunes versions. All of my music library from my CDs is MP3, so I’d like to keep it the same.
I have already downloaded one song using ‘play.com’ and it worked well, but the choice doesn’t seem to be that good.
All advice would be appreciated.

Amazon have a surprisingly good range, and tend to match your other specs.
( Full marks for being new and STILL spotting the great iTunes rip-off, by the way!).

You can buy off of Amazon and as you say Play.
The best site I have found is Spotify which allows you to listen to entire albums before you buy, then if you want to buy they have a company - Digital 7 - that sells. It also keeps your purchases on line for a limited number of downloads so should disater strike all is not lost.
This is my choice it may not be the best out there but I haven't found any where "cheaper" and it does the job.
