Ive just renewed my car tax with DVLA and true to word it arrived in 4 days. Has anyone had any problems with this system? I'm curious cos if it doesn't arrive, you have to contact DVLA and what do they tell you to do? As you cannot drive your car without a valid tax disc, you can't get to the Post Office to get another or do you have to stay in the house (cos you cant drive to work) and wait for a replacement??? Strange question I know - maybe I should get out more...
If you are worried about driving a car without a valid tax disc when you've done all you can to get one, then maybe you shouldn't be allowed out - not on your own anyway.
If a policeman stopped you - when explained to him and shown the reference number, he would give you a producer to produce the documents you don't have within 14 days or so. Therefore it would come within the 14days. If you get a ticket from one of our traffic warden friends, then you have a very good excuse for not paying the fine and a letter with the confirmation e-mail and again, producing your documents would suffice.
When i did mine last year i was hoping it would get lost/not arrive in time so i could put a note in the window saying "tax in post" like Del Boy! How sad am I?!
I know this is an old question but it popped up in Google. For the benefit of anyone wondering the same, there is an exemption from failing to display a tax disk in the first five working days of the month (note: you must apply for the tax disc before using the vehicle on the road).
It does not apply any other time, i.e. if you buy a car mid-month, you must buy a tax disc from the post office and display it before taking the vehicle on the road.
