Carogirl hit the nail on the head earlier on, euthanasia is practised in this country everyday by doctors and nurses, when terminally ill people get to a point where they become cross and agitated in the final days, feeding is stopped and a morphine pump attached (all with N.O.K permission of course) and death is imminent. I reserached this is my own experience and decided I would like a peaceful end rather than one which was distressing to the person and the family. Not an easy choice, but one I live with every day.
I used to work in a nursing home and there were a lot of residents with alzheimer's - some were having an absolute ball (one woman thought she was15 and the home was the factory she had worked in at that age) and others were very very depressed. There were also many residents who still had fully functioning minds but their bodies had given up on them. In the majority of cases the families never visited with the exception of the occasional half hour if it was someone's birthday. The families of those who had no quality of life would probably have been horrified at the thought of having their relative 'put to sleep' but at the same time they had no time for them and did nothing to improve the quality of life. I know it's hard to see someone you love deteriorate, but that doesn't mean you should shut them away and let them suffer out of sight. In many cases whether it's terminal or whether it's something that's never going to improve, I think euthanasia is the kindest measure and if I were in that position I'd want to go peacefully.

All I can say to that is my Nan will never ever ever be without us. We have a family rota to make sure she get's out on a (almost) daily basis.
Her home is a five minute walk from us so sometimes we just turn up and take her for a walk in the park.
Karen....when my Dad was in hospital I watched the other patients spend all day alone....dying people...alone. Shocking.
