Old style paper driving licences

I still have the old style paper driving licence but my colleagues inform me that this is now illegal and I need a photo one.  I don't remember hearing anything about changing it on the news etc.  Is it illegal?

From DVLA website:

"There are no plans to recall paper licences.  You can still use your paper licence until it expires or until you have to send it to us to change any details on it.  We will then issue you with a photocard licence. "

There is a difference between the old style paper licence and the new style plastic which has a paper COUNTERPART.  The counterpart shows your endorsements and points separately from the plastic which is why it's needed to be seen when hiring a car.

I still have my original paper licence, it looks very tatty now, but its a rare one, its all pink from the time (1988) when they were changing from green to the more recent green and pink. I believe they only came in all pink for a short while so I dont want to get rid of it.

Paper ones are still legal but are no longer issued, so they will be phased out in this way.
