i cannot sign up to avatars without changing my user name which is obviously in use with word ptress which is used by gravitar.
is there anyway around this?

you can use any username on gravatar, its the email address that has to be the same.

It won`t alter your user name on here, the only things that have to match are the email addresses

Your username doesn't matter - or shouldn't at least.

Is your Wordpress email address the same as the one you use for AB?
