Windows 7 networking issue

Hi all,

A bit of a weird one here! I'm helping some friends move a very old bit of software called Photosoft onto a new machine (the old one is a Pentium II running XP SP3). The new machine is running Windows 7 Home, and everything is connected via a workgroup.

I had a devil of a time mapping the drives - in the end, I had to set up accounts on the Windows 7 machine with the same names and passwords of those on the other XP machines on the network. The problem is that the software will not run now.

It's meant to run from an executable on the Windows 7 machine over the network and it does to an extent - but it bombs with a networking error.

Is there something really obvious I'm missing? I'm guessing that the problem is with the way that Windows 7 authenticates connections, but any pointers would be useful.

I'm a little confused here?

Are you trying to get the software to run on the windows 7 computer from a file stored on the XP computer?

I think you need to be more precise with exactly what you are doing, and what errors you are getting (I doubt it just says network error)

Also are you sure the software is windows 7 compatible?

Good point!

Right, the software is sitting on the W7 machine which is acting as a "server". As a standalone on that machine, it runs fine.

The XP machines are mapping to the W7 machine and trying to run the executable over the network. This is where the problems start.

It's a really old bit of software and runs straight from an .exe; it's not installed in the normal sense and has no registry or event log impact. The only error it returns is "Error 560", which is one of Photosoft's own internal errors and no use to man nor beast, alas.
thanks, a little clearer.

First thing I'd check is that the account you have setup on the windows 7 machine to match the XP account has got full read and write access to the share on the windows 7 machine. You need to check that it is listed in the permissions for both the sharing and the security.
