My GGrandfather John Simpson Stewart got Married in 6/2/1903 to Frances Husband I think they stayed at 7 Robertson Bank , Gorebridge Midlothian Which Colliery Did he work at ???
Cheers Ian Anderson
Ian, www.cwgc.org lists the vast majority of the war dead of both World Wars. Unfortunately I don't think these records alone will allow you to identify your GGrandfather. The Royal Scots were increased out of all proportion to their peacetime strength during WWI. They lost over 11,000 men killed. Searching the records for J or John Stewart gives 15 names...
Dot - he was definitely a coalminer - this query came up under genealogy a couple of days ago - I found the marriage record on ancestry - John Stewart was listed as a 20 year old coal miner- his father-in law James Husband was also listed as a colliery labourer
Oh ok, I could only ind that one colliery within walking distance of Gorebridge though there was the Vistoria Collery in the next town, but people didn;t walk far to get to work.
thanks dundurn and dothawks thanks for that . I have 3 certifcates from my gran ,
esther byres stewart - two certs have him as coal miner but the marriage cert says he is (deceased) , but my grans death cert has him in the royal scots (deceased)
I know a few coalminer enlisted into army during ww1. so I am looking for when he enlisted and where cheers Iananders

The Royal Scots were increased out of all proportion to their peacetime strength during WWI. They lost over 11,000 men killed. Searching the records for J or John Stewart gives 15 names after excluding men buried back in the UK. You may be able to exclude some of the others by going into their personal records - some may have detals of wives or parents which might make them ineligible.
You may be able to get some more information from the Royal Scots - now part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland but they have their own website. Genealogical enquiries cost £15 however.
thank you dundurn for that list I will look into them. but the first one on the list is the right you never know it could be him
cheers and have great weekend all the best Ander19
