Police killed election demonstrator then covered it up
// An anti fascist campaigner was almost certainly killed by a specialist riot squad officer at a demonstration against the National Front, according to a Scotland Yard report released today - 31 years after the notorious incident.
Blair Peach, a 33-year-old New Zealander, was hit over the head at the demonstration in Southall, west London on April 23 1979. He died in hospital of head injuries the next day.
The internal report also concluded that some officers conspired to cover up the truth surrounding the death of the special needs teacher.
Some 14 witnesses reported seeing Mr Peach being hit by a police officer. The previously secret report attaches "grave suspicion" to a policeman only identified as "Officer E", and recommends that officers E, H and F should face charges of perverting the course of justice. //

I wonder if lessons have been learnt and it could never happen today?

What is important is how it is dealt with.
I don't believe we have seen a cover-up in either of the two recent cases
In the Tomlinson case the officer was suspended and the whole thing was dealt with in the public eye.
You may not approve of the conclusion but it is light years away from what happened in the Blair Peach case.
That's not to say it couldn't happen again. Just that in current cases it has not happened.
