Could anyone please tell me in which year(s) of History was the film The Mask of Zorro (1998) set?

originally meant to be about 1815-1820 in California but before it was the USA.

The first bit before the original Zorro was caught is set in 1821 when the Mexicans gained independence from Spain and took over California.

The later part was set in the early-1840s shortly before the Americans took over during the Mexican Wars.
