If I remember correctly, Orwells 'Animal Farm' is a loosely based on the Russian Revolution. Napolean is supposed to be Stalin, Boxer represents the downtrodden workers and Snowball is Trotsky.
If you click here, that will link you to a web-page which deals with the 'characters in 'Animal Farm' including Snowball.
He's one of the pigs - originally in a dual leadership with Napoleon. I am a bit surprised that you need to ask, as it only takes 2 and a half hours to read the whole book.
Snowball's character is idealistic and brilliant he represents Trotsky.

he represents trotsky.

although he is seen as quite a positive figure, he automatically assumes that the pigs have control and leadership over the rest of the animals. and he is a bit of an idealist, whose great plans if they had gone through, might have went completely down the drain.
