My son has just purchased a new Base unit and wishes to be sure he won`t leave anything in the hard drive that will be of any use to anyone else should they get hold of it at the local dump. TIA

Just smash the hard drive, thats pretty well gauranteed safe!!
Take the hard drive out, take out screws/steel cover, and break up the discs inside with a hammer. 5 minutes work. Much quicker than any format.
There are thousands of hard drives around. Old small ones cost nothing now.

Cheers chaps, will tell him.
Or he could buy an external hard drive caddy as use the old drive with the new pc, as extra storage, back up or transporting files.
