What happens to the MPs who were ousted, do they have their previous jobs to go back to or businesses to run, also the staff of their constituency office, do they lose their jobs?
some will have jobs to return to, some won't. High-flyers may be offered City directorships by their chums. Constituency offices may well continue to exist, though, so staff won't necessarily be sacked.
Shades of Portillo (1997). Whilst I have my own political opinions and am happy to see members of opposing parties lose their seats, nevertheless this is a public humiliation for the loser and I therefore have sympathy with their position. Most people, when they lose their jobs, do so in the privacy of the manager's office. The public gloating at the demise of a sitting MP is more than redolent of the tricoteuses who surrounded the guillotine.
The truth is some will go onto retire, some will go onto the after dinner speakers circuit, some will go into consultancy posititions, some will go and get cozy with rent boys, but most will return to the real world and be absolutely shocked how reviled they are!!
You're probably right bobj on all counts and thanks to all for the previous answers. I only asked 'cos my MP lost after about 9 years in the seat, wondered what he was going to do now.
