Roughquest, these are called 'TPC's, Till Point Conversations. let me explain. Manufacturers and distributors pay retail companies a small fortune for placement of their product in the till area of a large store. This income then becomes a large percentage of the stores annual income and contributes to their profit.contribution to the business as a whole and thus to shareholders.
The 'TPC's are used to highlight and introduce to a customer these lines, which are usually bulk purchase,
The staff/store/company then guages it's performancve on the percentage of TPC lines sold against total sales, this is a way of meeting predicted sales.
Everything that a salesperson or till person asks you about at the till point is part of their 'script' and they are individually monitored on their results on a daily basis (in many lareg stores) as this is where the product placement can be evaluated for it's success and potential profit.
What a heap of the proverbial!
In our store (Co op) we don't force leaflets on you ,but we do HAVE to ask you if you have a membership card. I personally have had many a rollockings as I detest asking this question and usually don't.
