Are you British really so badly off?
17 Answers
I was living in Northern Ireland in 1997 when labour beat the conservatives. I remember everyone was sick of the conservatives and a lot were stuck in negative equity. I feel that British people are probably better off mow than they were then but they have forgotten. Good luck if the conservatives get back in. You will need it I feel.

In Ireland we have proportional representation but I don't think it works either. We always have to accept coalitions. The last time Fianna Fail too the Green Party on board to form a majority. So a party which has a 5% support in Ireland has about a 40% if not more run of the country. We are getting smacked with a carbon tax some time soon. Sickener.
gran - he's not an arrogant barstool; he lacks social skills and wants to cling onto his unelected time in downing street as long as possible. if he had any sense of public feeling and opinion, he would have resigned by now! i'm just waiting to see who will throw the first cleaver into his back! hopefully it will be soon so we don't have to see/hear that awful spech impediment anymore (you know - the one where his jaw flaps away when he speaks) x
The last few years have been difficult due to the world banking system coupled with the lack of control which is both the fault of the banks and government.
Its not just the UK that has witnessed 'the credit crunch' it was a global problem the first signs were in the USA 4 years ago.
I'm not a supporter of Labour or any particular political party but I dont think Gordon Brown did that bad a job.
