For the last couple of days I keep getting a pop up of Security Tool Warning saying my computer has been infected with a virus and telling me the only way to get rid of it is to subscribe to this, with payment of course. Please can someone tell me how to get rid of this. I keep clicking on continue unprotected but it just keeps coming back. I've also been receiving telephone calls for the last couple of days from a company telling me my computer is infected and they can help me. Of course they will if I pay them.

Have I actually got a virus and if so, what do I do?

Jan, it's a scam - there was a similar question on here a few weeks back. How would anyone know that your computer has a virus, and phone you about it? No third party should know anything about what's on your computer! I don't know how you get rid of the popups but I am sure someone else will. Do you have a virus checker already installed? If not, you can download one free off the internet.
it's not too bad to remove, but it needs to be done in safe mode.

Chuck I have tried what you suggested in the previous thread but the Security Tool Warning still keeps popping up and won't let me download anything or get in to my Control Panel to remove anything. Is there anything else I can try or am I destined to throwing my laptop out of the window? Will I have to take this somewhere to get it removed properly?
You need to download malwarebytes and install it using safe mode with network support otherwise it will block everything you try and do.

Safe mode with network support only gives you support for wired connections, not wireless, so if you normally use wireless you need to connect to the router using a Ethernet cable while you do it. (the yellow cable that came with the router)
jan are you in the manchester area or am i confusing your name with someone else.

when i had that security tool virus i could not shift it so i used a firm in urmston

think it cost me £40, he had to take the hard drive out of the laptop to shift it.
he picks up the lappy does the job and then returns the lappy to your address

Tried that Chuck but when I select safe mode and Enter my screen just freezes. I'm giving up for the night.

No sorry Dr Filth, I am in East Sussex, but agree think I am going to have to give it to a man that can because at this rate I will end up throwing it out of the window!
