I am employed at a large national retail store and my job title is customer service assistant and asa penny pinching exercise the manager is drawing up rotas for the staff to clean the toilets as the cleaner left months ago, i know many staff do not wish to do this job but seem to be doing it against there wish, afraid to say no in case they may lose there job, does any body know whether we have a choice.

Seeing as she has posted the question in the Law section I'm assuming she'd like to know where she stands legally if she were to decline. So answer the question somebody and stop preaching... .

you need to know which need diluting, which are flammable, how to store them, it;s basic common sense but also as i said, a legal requirement, in my previous managerial role I had to train staff on the use of Mr Sheen!!!! a COSHH sheet should be filed and available for staff to refer to if they spray it in their eyes or accidenbtally swallow it!!!
oh well i suppose I needed a full plumbing course before changing the company toilet system needless to say a full "course for dipsticks" on how to use a spanner ! I know and you should that there are plenty of people that have cleaning jobs with no such training needed. hey I even found the main tap to cut the water to all toilets on my own - smart aren't I ? at least by todays standards
For Heavens Sake - people have been cleaning toilets perfect adequately with bog brushes for decades without needing to undergo Health & Safety Training Courses. How have we ever lived without dying from the Black Plague with all these millions of housewives over the years cleaning lavatories in their homes. Just get the bl**dy brush, rub it briskly around and under the rim and remove any skid marks. Flush and then apply a small quantity of suitable cleaning product. If I found a dirty toilet in my work place I would often do just this myself. Did I undertake a training course? No, of course I didn't. I just got on with it and did it.
Its a mad and crazy world that we live in! I work for a Government Agency within the Facilites section and we had a young 17 year old female cleaner working through the summer for us and she wasnt allowed to use the Hoover as she wasnt 18! That wasnt our rules but that of the Cleaning company.
I thought i was being wound up when i was told but this was totally gospel, we only have Henry hoovers here as well not some sort of industrial machine that perhaps could take your hand off!
Utter bonkers i thought!

Hi,
I know this post is a little old but just came across it as having the same kind of problem. In our terms and conditions of employment we have a clause on flexibility of labour and if the task is to be paid at our rate and does not need specific training or health and safety then we are required to do it.
As for wanting to, I don't and if it wasn't for getting threatened with the sack then I have to do it. As for some of the people on here just pitching in and doing it, well this is why the country is in such a mess. I trained for 5 years to do my job, I get paid highly for what I know and do and yes sometimes I'm knee high in raw sewage but as for doing a job thats not mine and someone else use to get paid to do that job then NO STOP RIGHT THERE. Next time you stupid people get an internal from your Doctor just ask yourself the same stupid question.
