We flew to Vancouver, hired a car and drove through Whistler, Lake Louise, Banff etc. We did think about the Rocky Mountaineer, but decided in a car we could stop and go whenever we liked. We loved the drive from Lake Louise to Banff, all the wildlife we saw was unbelievable! Also, we drove up the Scenic Highway (between Lake Louise and Jasper) to the Columbian Icefield, where we took a huge snowmobile to the top and it snowed (in June) The scenery is out of this world.
I envy you - it is one of the best places I have ever seen.
travelled between jasper/vancouver last august booked
red but in may changed to gold,we glad we did the
service ,food ,was worth the upgrade, and the view was
out of this world, i cannot say about the red leaf view
but when we went downstairs to have our meals,
i seem to see a lot of tree's as you are on a lower level
we went strait from the train to victoria(over 3 hours)
but we had such a good lunch we were fit for the journey
so to sum up
you are two days on the train
except for the night in the hotel
two very nice breakfast's and lunch, and drinks
and a view to kill for (if the weather is good)
as to a route i had no option as i wanted to go
between jasper/vancouver
good luck
