At cadets, we wear the same uniform as the navy, except the badges are different.
On our fours, our working rig which we wear most of the time, we wear trousers, with either a longsleeved shirt and thick jumper or just the shirt, but the sleeves have to be rolled up. Do the navy do the same, or in the lat spring and early autumn, can they wear, just the shirt with the sleeves down to the wrists? Because we can't and i think its a bit odd, that we have to go from one extreme to another.
Hi mollykins, I was in the Royal Navy many years ago and the fours as you call them we used to call number 8s that we used for working in. We could either have the shirt sleeves rolled up or right down. They couldn't be just turned up a little bit it was a case of rolled up past the elbow or on the wrists and nothing in between.
hhmmm, that's a bit silly don't you think? but thanks for your answer.
in the spring and autumn we are either way to hot or frozen, but being able to have just the shirt, with the sleeves to the wrists would make us (and people in the navy) just right.
theshedman, just out of curiousity, what rate or rank did you get to?
Hi mollykins, maybe I worded it wrong but that's what I said you could either have them down on the wrists without being rolled up at all or if they were rolled up they had to be right up past the elbows and not just turned up one or two turns. I was a Naval Airman which may sound strange for the RN but I worked on an Aircraft Carrier and shore base as a Fireman working with aircraft.
aaahhh, i understand you now, its a bit odd that we can't wear our sleeves all the way down when its spring and autumn then.
I supose it is a bit strange, but i've learnt about the rates and ranks (and to get where i am, i've had to learn the equivilent rates and ranks of the army, marines and airforce)
