Do I dob them?

Hi guys,
First post so go easy on me!! I am currently holding a temporary position where I am supervisor to 4 staff.They all work between 3-6 each week night.They have no other jobs.3 out of 4 live on a sink estate (poor things) and without wishing to sound mean they have that "I'm entitled" mind set.The workplace changed management recently which is why I am now in charge.I have had to implement the changes ordered by the boss and one of those was that he wasn't going to allow the staff to eat the food he has to supply daily for the clients.The staff were eating loads of it to the point it was pushing up costs.I compromised by saying they could still eat at work even though they do not work long enough to actually warrant a break by law.I said they could bring their own or we would have staff biscuits that they could tuck into.I also asked them if it was a big ask they said -no that they ate cos it was there.All sorted or so I thought.I was off for a week ill and on my return 1 of the staff has informed me that the other 3(from the sink estate) have pigged out on client's food the whole week I was away and have been constantly moaning behind my back at how unfair it is that they are only getting biscuits now.They have all day to eat before they come to work so the only thing I can see it as is that they don't like change.I have the opportunity to make this job permanent but am not sure I want to if i cannot trust the staff to follow the rules if I am away.So do I ride out the temporary contract and just tell the boss in 6 weeks,or do i dob them now,bearing in mind that temporary or permanent contract I am the one stuck with them every night and they will know that I told on them!Would the fallout be worth it? What do you think?They are great at their actual jobs by the way.

it doesn't matter where anyone comes from - if you take on a job and the conditions require that you sit on the roof in the rain each Friday then if you want the job that's what you do no ifs or buts - your job is to supervise so do it without asking for their permission - their job requires them not to eat whatever it is they aren't supposed to eat so they should do it or...

Ummm-I could always go for a nice Rioja ;).maybe that girl had issues-who knows -who cares!
Seriously,all I am saying is that this lot may know no better because of how they have to live as in if they obeyed rules the police wouldn't doorstep the area most nights and you all know what I mean despite your fine efforts to take the mick and wind up.At the end of the day i just want to do the right thing for all of those involved and will take carmalee's good advice.Thanks carmalee

i have to agree with ummm on this one actually .....as i live one one of those estates "it is a horrible place where they live and I do feel genuinely sorry for them but nice as they are as individual people,they are thick and chavvy with negative attitudes-is that better?-saying it direct and rudely rather than being subtle."
i am in no way chavvy thank you very much and neither are my neighbours, you feel sorry for them wow you do think you are high and mighty you will probably find there houses inside are better looking than yours and no not with loads of stolen stuff in them !! oh just noticed the thick and chavvy yeah of course i am thick too , sorry totally disagree as i own my business and when i was a supervisor and assistant manager the ladies and gentlemen i supervised respected me! if they didnt like something i done they came and spoke to me about it not to other people ,whereas they came to me if other supervisors or the manager did something and i always fought their corner ,you don't seem to be a good supervisor if you cannot control your staff! get off your high horse and grow a back bone then your staff will respect you until then do NOT ever feel sorry for them if they are in fact chavvy and thick as you suggest then tell them so don't be nice to them if you don't like them!!

You could turn it around - call them in all together and thank them for supporting you by not eating the food as requested, making your job easier as you won't now have to report anyone to the boss - the ones who have been eating will not know that they have been reported and might just feel they need to toe the line for a while. If they haven't been eating the food and the one who reported them is lying then that person will feel pretty stupid. It might get you through the few weeks.
