overcoming Driving test nerves
7 Answers
I have taken three practical driving tests and failed all of them, through nerves. I nearly passed the first time, I only failed on reversing, which I had reversed earlier into the same space perfectly. I have done two more tests and failed again, I go to pieces completely when there is an examiner sat next to me. Any ideas of what might help, hypnotherapy? I am assuming my ADI knows what he is doing, as one test was over 1 year ago.

Since then i have discovered Aspen (similar to Rescue remedy) from holland and barretts is even better for panicky situations!
Actually I already take two types of anti-depressant because I suffer from anxiety and depression. The driving instructer says my reactions are OK, but I do have trouble concentrating, my last test was 15th june, he asked me to do the reverse parking first, again I had done it perfectly less than 5 minutes ago into the same space, I knew if I messed it up I would fail, and sure enough, failed agin!
I actually already take anti-depressants so I can't take beta-blockers as well. The instructor says my reactions are ok, and that I drive well normally, I do have problems with concentration, but it is so galling to have done a reverse correctly when I arrive at the test centre and then go out and back in to the same bay and mess it up because the examiner is there.
hi librarylady I'm gonna get the mickey taken out of me cos of this but I only passed on my 7th test. It was all because of nerves, i too went to pieces as soon as the examiner got in the car with me. My instructor sat in on 2 tests and said i was doing nothing wrong just seemed way too nervous, he suggested after failing my 3rd test that i go to docs and get something to calm my nerves but i was too scared in case it made me too relaxed if you know what i mean? Anyway after failing my 6th test, i went to the docs and explained, straight away she prescribed some diazepam(real low dose) to take before doing my test, I did this and as I was having my test i just felt so calm i was thinking 'I've passed this time' and i did. Lots and lots of good luck to you next time you have a test and dont forget to let us know how you get on
I would completely recommend rescue remedy. I mixed it with other bach stuff which i think was elm, olive and something else. All the ones that say they calm you. I wasn't nervous at all through my two tests (failed first cos i bumped the curb!). Have a look at the different range of bach remedies found in boots and give them a go. All you have to do is put in the dosage in a glass/bottle of water and swig. There is no limit on how much. it really does work. Good luck, you can do it.
