i wonder how long quizmaster has been waiting to say that?
It has been named for thousands of years - but it has not always been called america.
Who's Quizmaster, Toby? If you mean me, I've said it many a time over the years here on AnswerBank. That's because people persist in duplicating their questions....and I can't be bothered duplicating my answers, especially if they involve clickable links, as this one did.
i read in a few books that i cant remember to reference and so subsequently hope some one backs me, that infact america wasn't named after vespucci, but that a monk at the time has erroneously said it was. he apparently apologised for it 14 years after stating this, but much like an apology in the sun, no body really noticed and so the myth has lasted for 500 odd years. i read some thing also about some ancient star called merica that was supposed to be to the west of babylon. some sumerian myth i think.
