Tesco supports cheap alcohol ban

News today says that Tesco would support laws to introduce ban on sales of cheap alcohol.

Why wait until the law comes in, Tesco? Put your money where your mouth is and increase your alcohol prices now, just before the World Cup starts.

I'm sure Asda, Sainsbury's and the rest would be delighted if you do that

My point jno was on the hypocrisy of Tesco. If they really believe in the words they are saying they would put prices up now. There's no need for a law to put restrictions in place - it's a free market in some ways, but with restrictions on price fixing to prevent competition.

I try to avoid Tesco because iof the time it takes to get round my local store which is about the size of Rutland

What they're saying is ok - they would like to put prices up but have to stay competitive, so would support laws to increase prices but keep the palying field level.
I don't see the problem.

There is nothing hypocritical in opting not to do something unilaterally because you would suffer if you did. One can legitimately point out problems in the rules without allowing those who do not accept the argument gain advantage over you. To do otherwise would be just foolish.

Whilst I tend to support fewer restrictions wherever possible, I do think that there is something irresponsible about having such a potent drug available at rock bottom prices. At the very least alcohol should never be a loss leader. And any minimum price that encouraged producers to concentrate on quality rather than quantity is no bad thing.
